Direct optical link between SPL and MAVIR (TSO)

2023. February 25.

Digitalisation is increasingly permeating several areas of the power sector. The biggest challenges for fully digital substations are the significant amount of data, millisecond latency and microsecond time accuracy requirements.

Communication infrastructure providers now allow for "physical" dark fibre point-to-point connections. This technology is (among others) suitable for connecting geographically distant laboratories in real time.

In February 2023, the optical connection between BME's SPL and MAVIR laboratories was established. Based on the first tests  it is possible to emulate a functionally identical site in all respects, despite the geographical distance of more than 20 km. In this way, we are confident that real-time joint full-fledged experiments can be carried out in the two laboratories without being influenced by the physical location of the devices.
